Chapter 4
Text and data reformulation
Forms and diagrams
Introduction
Examination Question 4, which is worth 20 marks, is based on this chapter.
>>> STAGE 1: IDENTIFY THE TASK
This type of question normally has some written information (a note, letter, tapescript, etc), and a form or diagram. You are asked to pick out the details required and answer in the space provided on the form or diagram. You may be required to use some of the information to complete boxes entitled “Special Requests“ or “Further lnstructions.“ The question normally reads “Use the information to complete the form“ or “Use the information to complete the chart.“ You do not have to write full sentences, only the relevant word(s) or number(s).
>>> STAGE 2: BEFORE YOU START
You have to decide which details are required on the form or diagram and find these in the given information.
The best approach is:
1. Read through the given information and work out what it is about.
2. Look at the form or diagram and see what information is required.
3. Go back to the first question and start answering them one by one.
Remember:
Write your answer in the correct place. Make sure you give the correct details.
lf you can‘t answer a question, go on to the next and come back to it later.
>>> STAGE 3: HOW TO ANSWER
You are only required to fill in specific details in the form. Don‘t use full sentences. lf it is possible to answer with one word or a number then do so. lf the question requires you to complete the form using block capitals, then do so.
>>> STAGE 4: CHECK YOUR WORK
Checklist: Forms and diagrams
1. Have you completed the task?
2. Have you put the answer in the correct space?
3. Have you answered all the questions?
4. Have you checked spelling?
